Lines, Value, Shapes/Form, Color, Texture, Space

Lines

This was the first thing I saw when I woke up in the morning and I immediately thought that this would work perfectly for this project.

Color

My mom and I bought these recently and let me tell you, they bring absolute joy to out household! Sometimes we like to joke and call them our pretty gay flowers, but I also think they're just very nice to look at.

Texture

I had to get down on the ground for this one. I wonder what my neighbors would have thought if they had seen me trying to take a picture of the wood on the floor of my deck.

Value

This is a picture of the sheets I have strung across the top of my bed. I love the way they create such beautiful lines and shading. They are especially pretty with my Christmas lights on around them, but that would have impaired on the shadow of this image.

Shape/Forms

I honestly believe that this picture could have also accounted for texture and line, but what I was really trying to get out of this picture was the image of the pieces on the board and the way they intimidate each other mid battle. I incredibly enjoy this photo.

Space

This one was hard to think of until I realized that space is virtually all around us, but no one simply wants to look at a picture of my arm or a wall? I just had to find a nice photo then.

BONUS !

This is a rather old picture of me with my long hair. When I explained this assignment to my mom, she suggested this photo because of the way my hair moved in such a natural and pretty way. I think this would fall under the category of line.

Pumpkin Practice Sketch

This is a drawing I did during class to practice dramatic shadow and drawing pumpkins. I don't think it turned out the best.. but I will hopefully improve soon.

Things I Take for Granted

Studio Photography #25

I often take for granted my intelligence and my health. Most people do not think of questions such as, what would I do if I could not read? What would I do if I could not understand English? What if I could not remember? Ideas like this are ones not often considered because these ideas slip our mind. We get wrapped up in many other things and take for granted the wonderful privileges we have.

Studio Photography #24

I often take for granted the power of being outside and the effects nature can have on a person. If I am stressed, I like to go sit down on my back patio, put my feet in the grass and look up at the trees. I often look at them asking myself, "What would I do if I could paint them?" This helps me to get my mind thinking and ground me again in reality. I love to hear the sounds of the birds and watch them land on our feeder.

Studio Photography #23

I think this is a very common thing we take for granted, but I often take for granted the amazing education I am receiving. The teachers are amazing and the school is highly regarded throughout the state and, clearly, the world. I love learning new things and doing work and this school is absolutely the best I could have ever chosen.

Studio Photography #22

Of course, I need to add that I take for granted my pets. I go day-by-day with them surrounding me with their care and I don't often stop to think about the obvious coming of their death in years to come. What will I do without a companion to cuddle with at night or something to comfort me if I'm alone or scared? I often forget how much I rely on the companionship of my animals in my daily life.

Now this one is going to sound silly, but I really do take for granted the ability to use a microwave. I say this because one time our microwave had broken and we could not eat any of the leftover food that we had in the fridge. My mom ended up having to go and buy a cheap microwave for us to use. Long story short, don't let your microwave break.

COMFORT IN DARKNESS

For this piece, I was hoping to teach myself some realistic detailing and shading techniques. I did this using only two pencils, a lighter one for fine detail and overall structure and a darker one for more realistic shadow, as well as working slowly. I also wanted to focus on texture, meaning I wanted it to seem like you could feel the texture of the shell through the drawing. I feel as though I accomplished this. The most difficult thing about doing this, however, is the amount of detail that I ended up putting into this painting. I was completely stressed out trying to finish this drawing because I wanted to make sure that I had all the proper detail and value of the shells. Most parts I think turned out well, like the more lighter parts, since I am not very good at shadow yet I believe. I do think I learned more about it though. I’m confident that if I were to draw something like this again then I would be able to draw something of maybe even a higher quality. A mentor that I enjoy learning and viewing is an artist that goes by the name Loish, or Lois van Baarle. She does an excellent job with shading and the use of color in her drawings. I have been admiring her for many years now and I truly aspire to be just like her one day. In the class, I usually looked to my right at Gabrielle for a comparison to my art and hers. I went to school with her and I have been admiring her ability to draw such realistic drawings for the past couple years. If I was able to do this drawing over, I would make something more abstract. I would, rather than add so much detail, take detail out and use many more values. I do feel very happy and proud of this drawing nonetheless. I accomplished my beginning goal of making a drawing look as realistic as possible and seem almost lifelike.

What I'm Obsessed With

Studio Photography #20

And of course, I have to add my very clear obsession: art! I have been drawing and painting since I can remember and my style is almost all self taught (the other parts being little things I picked up from other artists like simple color theory and anatomy). I am absolutely passionate about drawing and when I get in the mood to draw, nothing can stop me from doing so!

Studio Photography #19

I am obsessed with learning, especially languages, philosophy, and, of course, art! I value my intelligence greatly and consider myself a quick learner. Although I am prone to becoming easily frustrated if I do not understand something, I welcome learning new things often whenever an option is presented.

Studio Photography #18

I am very reliant and obsessed with music. I use it to calm me down or bring up my mood. I listen to music while drawing and get my best pieces from doing so.

Studio Photography #17

Other things I'm obsessed with are my cats! I love them and absolutely adore each of their personalities. The one in this picture is who we call Pudgey, and may I say he is very photogenic!

Studio Photography #16

A couple things I am obsessed with, represented by this picture, is my laptops and my phone. I use these objects for so many things and I rely on them so much. I use my laptop for entertainment, learning, and talking with my friends. I use my phone to listen to music if I get anxious or need something to keep me occupied. This sounds very corny, but I do not think I would able to continue peacefully if it were not for these objects in my life.
